The first pancake is always a mess.

Nobody blames the cook. The pan just isn't ready.

Leadership has first pancakes too.

The first time you manage your old peers. The first difficult conversation. The first time the room goes quiet and waits for your call.

You burn one and decide you can't cook.

Then you compare it to someone else's fifteenth.

These are my 3️⃣ tidbits for your first few pancakes.

1️⃣ A mess is not a verdict

The role is new. The relationships are new. So is the heat. Early mistakes tell you about the pan. Not whether you can cook.

2️⃣ Learn the heat

Too cold is dodging the hard conversation because you're still mates. Too hot is using your authority on people you had lunch with last week.

Both teach you where the heat sits.

3️⃣ Watch your own pan

Compare your second pancake to your first. Not your first to their fifteenth.

Next time you decide you can't cook, ask one question.

Compared to whom?

You don't become a better cook by avoiding the kitchen.

You become one by making the next pancake.
