Leadership session at the Australian National Audit Office

Leadership session at the Australian National Audit Office

I was invited by the Band 2 Group Executive Director (a/g) Xiaoyan Lu at the Australian National Audit Office to speak at one of her popular leadership sessions to share some leadership and career tidbits from my career.

These are 3️⃣ tidbits I shared during the session:

1. Fear is the price of courage

Comfort is great, but courage comes from facing your fears and through that there is personal growth.

I mentioned the trials and tribulations of pivoting from a lawyer to becoming the ATO’s spokesperson in the middle of COVID and the importance of small consistent steps to get over my fears of public speaking.

Face those fears!

2. Growth mindset

It’s important to shift your mindset when trying new things. Just add one small, yet powerful word: "YET!"

I'm not a great public speaker yet.

I can't lead this team through this new change yet.

A simple tweak to the way you speak to yourself and when referring to your abilities to others can change how you see ourselves, immediately changes how you feel and what you can ultimately achieve with time!

3. Feedback

As a leader it is important to provide praise and criticism/constructive feedback to my team members and peers. I used to shy away from providing feedback because I didn’t want to hurt people’s feelings, but by staying quiet you can make things worse.

Give praise that is specific and timely.

Give criticism that is kind and clear.
